2000 Gibson SG [4.5 lbs] :: broken tuner & setup

2000 Gibson SG [4.5 lbs] :: broken tuner & setup.

The player had been noticing that his G string would not stay in tune.  After talking with him he remembered that he had bumped the headstock, specifically on the G tuner.  It did not look obvious at first, but the rear casing of the tuner had broken loose.  This allowed the gears to float slightly and not mesh tightly.  We ended up just replacing the G tuner so I slightly tarnished the finish to better match the other tuners.

The setup included changing from 11's to 10's, cleaning the electronics, tightening the output jack and deburring the saddle slots.

2013 Fender Blacktop Strat HH [8.1 lbs] :: setup

2013 Fender Blacktop Strat HH [8.1 lbs] :: setup

A blacked out double-humbucker Mexican Strat on the bench for a setup.  The fit and finish is pretty decent however the factory set the saddles flat with respect to the fingerboard.  The saddles needed to be adjusted to match the 9.5" curvature of the fingerboard.  This guitar is for a young student so the floating bridge was tightened flush against the body to help minimize any possible tuning frustrations.

The 5-way switch offers some really cool options:

  1. full neck pickup
  2. neck forward single coil
  3. both pickups full
  4. both pickups inside single coils
  5. full bridge pickup

Kalliope neck carve

Kalliope neck carve.

I took some time last week to make improvements to my old neck holding jig for carving necks.  The 1" thick plywood it was made from had cupped badly so I sandwiched it with two pieces of 3/8" plywood on either side to straighten it out.  This also significantly increased it's rigidity, which makes carving much more efficient.  The more your carving jig deflects, the less wood you remove with each stroke.  I also took a torch to the jig and burned it to give it a bit of character and then sealed it with a coat of shellac.

Kalliope 001's neck is in the jig, the neck for Rogue 005 is on the bench in the background.
