Setup :: 2014 Yamaha FG700S [4.4 lbs]
A return customer recently picked up this inexpensive dread as a camping, beach, etc guitar. Unfortunately I found a top crack and recommended that he return / exchange the guitar since he purchased it only a few weeks ago. Bummer, this one didn't sound too bad and played really well. The crack was not a big deal to repair, but not on a new guitar.
Tweak :: Schecter Stiletto Studio 5 [9.2 lbs]
A player dropped by with his 5 string bass for a truss rod tweak to add relief. He was getting buzzes on the low frets because of the overly straight neck.
New Standard Tuning Setup :: 1986 Ovation 1867 Legend [5.1 lbs]
Have you ever heard the term, "New Standard Tuning (NST)"? I hadn't either until a couple weeks ago. This involves tuning the guitar to all fifths C-G-D-A-E-G (standard tuning is in 4ths). This NST tuning was popularized by Robert Fripp (King Crimson) in use of his "Guitar Craft" classes. Students attending this class all employ this tuning to remove familiar patterns and well-played riffs. The class then can focus more on basic techniques and a renewed relationship with making music on guitar.
This particular Ovation is recommended for this class, so a player brought this by to set it up for the week-long experience. More info on New Standard Tuning (NST) here and the Guitar Craft here.
Skunk Stripe Repair :: 2001 Fender Precision Bass Special [9.1 lbs]
The walnut "skunk stripe" had raised up and become proud of the neck. This walnut strip had settled to where it wants to be over the years due to a poor fit (and possibly dry joint when built). The strip did not move when clamped so I didn't like the idea of heating and clamping it flush (most likely introducing more stresses). I ended up cutting away the flakey finish between the walnut and maple and filling wood gap with dust and superglue, then top coating the repair with just superglue. Finally, the area was wet sanded and buffed out.
LR Baggs Transplant :: 2010 Yamaha FG-336SBII [5.3 lbs]
A player in the area dropped by with a used pickup in one hand, this guitar in the other. The LR Baggs Anthem he brought with him had been previously installed in another guitar and needed to be refurbished a bit. The adhesive had to be cleaned from the modules and prepped to remount with new adhesive (for the sound hole control module & internal microphone). The undersaddle pickup took a bit of work to balance as the pliable element had conformed to another saddle slot. Gig ready.
