Another SG in the shop for a setup. This one is celebrating Gibson's 120th anniversary via the 12th fret inlay. The player was having tuning issues and I was hoping to save the original nut, but the slot were far too low. I could have filled and recut them, but that often is just a band aide and does not provide great tuning stability. We decided to cut a fresh bone nut. A pretty 1960 reissue Les Paul in for a setup and broken tuner knob. Gibson Deluxe tuners are a fairly delicate tuner when compared to others. A common issue is that the rear covers can become loose over time. These tuners were fairly tight but the D string tuning knob was failing from a previous repair. The knob was cracked and glued by the player, but the glue had begun to fail. In the video below from the vlog, I was able to open up the knob and work some super glue into the break before clamping it closed.
A creative alternative to shimming a nut with this small piece of wood. I see a lot of business card scraps but this is the first mini nut to come across the bench. Unfortunately in this position the "fix" wreaks havoc on intonation as it shortens the scale length on the G string. Ideally I like to replace the nut but removing the additional piece of wood and filling / recutting the nut slot was a more economical solution for the customer.
A gorgeous brand new flame top Les Paul in for a setup. The original setup was actually pretty decent but a little too low for this player. I ended up straightening the neck and raising the bridge slightly. I also filed and polished out the saddle slots to keep the strings from binding. My only pet peeve with this guitar is the bridge location. Note that the saddle positions are pushed all the way to the rear of the bridge. This guitar is properly intonated with 10's and I'd like to see these saddles end up more in the middle of the bridge to allow for more flexibilty in string gauges (ie bigger strings need the saddles to be pushed back further). Kind of odd considering Gibson has state of the art manufacturing facilities, but maybe I'm missing something in their decision.
